Top Ten Tuesday: May 13, 2014 – Ten Books I Almost Put Down But Didn’t

TTT

It’s Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by the wonderful blog at The Broke and the Bookish! This week’s topic:
Ten Books I Almost Put Down But Didn’t

Hmmm, this is an interesting topic. DNFs are a tricky issue and usually I’m okay with putting a book down. I have a shelf full of DNFs that every once in a while, I feel guilty about but then again, I don’t because I truly wasn’t enjoying them. (I also feel like this list will be full of all the sads and frustration so sorry in advance!) I didn’t really have any books that I was happy I almost put down but didn’t so really, just a sad list here! 🙁

frustratingcharacters

These poor MCs. I tried and I tried. I spent a whole book with them! Still, we did not get along. Some I fared better with because of plot. Some I got more frustrated with because of plot. But these are the ones that I just couldn’t identify with much at all.

Defiance – C.J. Redwine
What I Saw and How I Lied – Judy Blundell
Nobody But Us – Kristin Halbrook
Mind Games – Kiersten White

notamebook

The characters were okay on these, but I wasn’t a huge fan of the overall theme. Super feminist?  Pro-cheating? Just not my cup of tea. I don’t have anything wrong with feminism, of course, but it’s not a main theme I really enjoy reading about directly.

Commencement – J. Courtney Sullivan
Something Borrowed – Emily Giffin

plotandpacing

A poor adaptation. Weird pacing. Unbelievable plot. I just couldn’t get on board with the overall story. I was interested in some of what was going on and was able to finish but they certainly didn’t make and top lists for me.

Furious – Jill Wolfson
Son – Lois Lowry
The Murmurings – Carly Anne West

So a couple of books you’d be surprised to see I didn’t like! Some I’m sure many people had similar issues with. Are there any you’re surprised to see on my list? Or did you have similar issues with these characters/plots/topics?

I actually had a surprisingly hard time with Defiance too! I thought the story moved a touch too slowly for me, though I wound up enjoying it in the end. I still haven’t continued on with it though!

I haven’t read any of these books, and the only one I’m interested in is Defiance. I’m planning on doing a binge read when the third book comes out. Hopefully I won’t have the same problems with the MC.

I had to change my TTT topic a little bit because I couldn’t think of ten books worthy to be in a “top” list for this topic. 😛

I like your categorization! I’m not ashamed to admit defeat while reading, so my contributions to this week’s topic were minimal (my co-blogger picked up my slack :)) But, I totally agree with frustrating main characters. That’s a big part of each of my almost DNF’s. I don’t know what glimmer of hope kept me reading though!

I was in a similar boat, – usually if I’m not feeling a book, I put it down and grab another. I did have a few that I stuck with, and I’m glad I did. But I also had a few that I stuck with and ended up not caring for the book at all. I haven’t read any of these books, primarily because they would fall in the “not for me” category.

I’ve only read one of these, but I’m totally with you on Mind Games. I think I only finished it because it was so short. Other than that. . . wasn’t a fan.

I’m surprised you didn’t like Defiance! I love that series so much, but Rachel is definitely a difficult protagonist. She only gets more difficult in the second book too, but I still love the books. Can’t wait for the last one actually!

I have a copy of Mind Games so you’e opinion hasn’t fazed me, but it’s lowered my expectations, so thank you Brittany. I’ve also got Defiance that I’m planning on trying soon, so that’s some lower expectations too. For me, if a main character isn’t easy to get along with or connect to, I’m always pretty tempted to ditch, but writing style can through me as well, perspective or narration, but maybe I’m just picky? Great list! 🙂
