TOP TEN TUESDAY
August 30, 2016

It’s Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by the wonderful blog at The Broke and the Bookish! This week’s topic was a back-to-school theme and I chose Ten Books With a Boarding School Setting

ya boarding school

I don’t know why but boarding school books are so appealing. Maybe because we get to see kids outside of home and boarding with classmates so you get a totally different feel than when parents are involved. It’s an easy way to have kids spend time together constantly and I love the camaraderie they inspire. It’s also a great way to eliminate parents from a plot without killing them off, so that’s always nice. Anyway, no matter which way you slice it, I am a fan of boarding schools! Here some of my favorite books that feature them:

  • The Elemental Trilogy by Sherry Thomas | Eton College | Eton College is a wonderful place. I want to be there with Titus, Fairfax, Kashkari, Wintervale, and all of these boys who have such wonderful friendships!
  • The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling | Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry | This is obviously #dreamschools, right here.
  • Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins | School of America in Paris | Minus the fact that like Anna, I can’t speak a lick of French, I want to be at SOAP with Anna, Mer, Josh, and of course, St. Clair!
  • The Curse Workers Trilogy by Holly Black | Wallingford | Wallingford is maybe a little less wholesome than the aforementioned schools, but that may just be because of some of its students with crime-boss families!
  • The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss | The University | I so want to attend the University and I love its role in these books! It’s such an important part of Kvothe’s life and really just makes you want to LEARN. (And learn magic.)
  • Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead | St. Vladimir’s Academy | A vampire school? Well, probably not a dream school for me to attend but I always love a book that incorporates a school for magical/gifted characters!
  • The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson | Armedius Academy | I loved that Armedius had Rithmatist and non-Rithmatist students. It was neat to see how the two worked together and the conflict that formed when the lines were crossed.
  • The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater | Algionby Academy | Okay, so this is kind of borderline boarding school. The Raven Boys room together in an apartment and some students live in campus housing, so it does have that kind of feel. Other boys are from the town or surrounding area and therefore live at home so it’s not a technical boarding school but it certainly has that feel sometimes!
  • Loop by Karen Akins | The Institute | A school for time-travelers? Yes, please! How neat would that be? I actually wish the book spent some more time at the school, just because I love that kind of stuff, but I also wouldn’t change a thing!
  • Shadow and Bone by Leigh Barudgo | The Little Palace | This isn’t so much a school as an… army. But the characters learn together and are all housed in the same place. I will take it just the same!

What are your favorite boarding school reads? I know there are so many more that I still need to get to (especially some of Ally Carter’s books)!

I was like… Shadow and Bone? But I get what you mean about it kind of being a semi-boarding school! Oh, and I think my favourite one set at a boarding school would have to be Anna and the French Kiss from this list! I wasn’t even aware that The Raven Boys was set at one D: Still gotta read that…

Why and how do you always know exactly what I need to see / what kinds of books I’ve been searching for?

So happy to know that the Elemental series is boarding school-related!! Waaaaay more intrigued now. I also forgot that Loop has a school in it! I own both of them and (much to Andi’s dismay) have not read them yet. Bumping up the list now!

Oh man! Great list. I did something similar this week and I have a lot of the same schools. Seriously who wouldn’t love going to these school. I actually almost put The Little Palace as one of my choices but changed my mind. Great list!
