The Deja Vu Review [25]: Freebie!

DJVR

The Deja Vu Review is a new Sunday feature with mini-reviews from books I’ve read before I began my blog at The Book Addict’s Guide! Since I’ve been reading my whole life and only started my blog back in April of 2012, this is my opportunity to revisit some older books and share some mini-reviews of those that didn’t quite make it into the blog spotlight after the initial read.

This week’s topic:  Freebie week!

It’s a freebie week, so we’re picking WHATEVER BOOK WE WANT. I did a quick search through my Goodreads and I don’t think I’ve ever had the opportunity to talk about my feelings for The Help. So let’s, shall we?

The HelpThe Help by Kathryn Stockett
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
My Original GR review: This was an excellent read. It was pretty long at 522 pages, but all of them were worth it. It’s a great story about the bravery to tell the story of the accounts of the segregation of black and white in the 1950s and 60s and the maids working for the families in Mississippi. The accounts just seem so incredibly genuine and enlightening. I would definitely recommend to anyone. It’s a rich and heartwarming story.
Comments: Now, I don’t usually like historical ficiton. And I don’t usually like all the award-winning books with good messages. I always prefer easy reads haha – But The Help really was a truly great story. It took a little while to get into for me, but it was so worth it. I’d recommend it to anyone, and if you’re interested in the movie, it’s a really great adaptation of the book. That’s something I usually struggle with, so I was glad that it stayed so true to the book.

I haven’t read this one. My mom got it for Christmas the other year and I started the first chapter, but then I had to come home and I haven’t ever started it again. I think how popular it is has kinda turned me away as crazy as that sounds. Perhaps one day! 🙂

I adore The Help! I loved it long before it became a movie and was so glad to see that Hollywood did it justice, and cast such amazing women in the amazing roles.

I actually haven’t read this one, though I do own it. I’ve heard good things about the book and the movie, but I tend to stay away from those books that are mega-hits. Eventually I might read it. We’ll see.
