It’s time for TGIF again, thanks to Ginger at GReads!
So this week’s TGIF topic is:
Back to School Reading: Which books would you like to see in today’s high school Literature classrooms?
I actually just briefly touched on this in my rant discussion post from August 1st (Are Books Back?).
My high school (albiet almost 10 years later) reads awesome books. Well, NOW they do. When I was there, it was all classics. Here are some books that would have been nice to read in high school (2001-2005):
A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray (2003)
Looking For Alaska by John Green (2005)
The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky (1999)
Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card (1985)
And here are some books that I’ve read lately that I think high schoolers now would enjoy and would even fit well in classrooms:
Such A Rush by Jennifer Echols
The Sky Is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson
Graceling by Kristin Cashore
If I Stay by Gayle Forman
The Maze Runner by James Dashner
The Help by Kathyrn Stockett
What do you guys think? Agree with any of these? Know what’s going on in your (old) high school?

Looking For Alaska was actually one of my required readings! It was one of my favorite books that I just HAD to read in High School. As far as your others go, I haven’t read a lot of them but I think I’ve heard enough good things to convince me they would be excellent additions to classrooms.
p.s. I am so sorry it took me so long to check out your TGIF post as well!
I totally agree with If I Stay. I’m not sure with Graceling. I’m not sure if it’s “literature” material, you know? But I don’t know what they read in high school anymore, I’ve been out of school for aaages!
I suppose that’s true! Some of them were just more wishful thinking 🙂 lol
When I was in high school, it was all classics as well! And almost every book we read was written by a man. Seriously, there were only about 5 books written by women that we read in my FOUR years of high school. Ridiculous!
Great list, though.
Graceling was very good, I haven’t read Such a Rush or If I Stay but I hear they’re very good, and would probably do well in schools. We had almost all classics as well when I was in high school, it was okay but the kids need to identify with books more modern. I have no idea what they would be reading now though. They need to keep the Shakespeare, but not Romeo and Juliet because I’m so sick of that play lol.
Haha I agree! I was beat to death with classics and I actually don’t even want to pick up any anymore. Kind of a shame! Shakespeare should stay, but I would have loved to read some modern books mixed in as well. It sucked taking honors English too because we got even more classics!
Such a Rush and If I Stay are both very, very excellent!!!
