Welcome to the very first ever edition of Casting Call, hosted by Tee @ YA Crush, Sandie @ Teen Lit Rocks, Candice @ The Grown-Up YA, Dixie & Maggie @ Gone Pecan, and of course, me too! Each Friday we’ll take a couple of characters from our favorite books and discuss who we’d think would be perfect for the roles! And of course this gives us the opportunity as well to rehash our favorite parts of the story and swoon over all those dream literary crushes of ours.
This week, we’re casting for The Fault in Our Stars by John Green! If you haven’t read the book or want to catch up on what it was about, here’s a quick summary from Goodreads and a link to my original review:
Diagnosed with Stage IV thyroid cancer at 13, Hazel was prepared to die until, at 14, a medical miracle shrunk the tumours in her lungs… for now.
Two years post-miracle, sixteen-year-old Hazel is post-everything else, too; post-high school, post-friends and post-normalcy. And even though she could live for a long time (whatever that means), Hazel lives tethered to an oxygen tank, the tumours tenuously kept at bay with a constant chemical assault.
Enter Augustus Waters. A match made at cancer kid support group, Augustus is gorgeous, in remission, and shockingly to her, interested in Hazel. Being with Augustus is both an unexpected destination and a long-needed journey, pushing Hazel to re-examine how sickness and health, life and death, will define her and the legacy that everyone leaves behind.
My original review: The Fault in Our Stars (posted 9/7/12)
This week, I will be casting Mr. & Mrs. Waters (Augustus’s parents):
Mrs. Waters: The only real description I could find for Augustus’s mom was “short and mousy” but other than that, I didn’t have much to go on. I wanted his mom’s character to be a strong one. I felt like both of Augustus’s parents tried to remain upbeat for most of the book and ultimately supportive. We also know his mom really loves all of those proverbial little sayings since they’re covering the entire house.
So I’d searched for who I could picture as a good Mrs. Waters and I came up with Patricia Clarkson. Most recently I recognized her for her role in Easy A as Emma Stone’s mother. Although quite a different character from what I’d be casting her in for The Fault in Our Stars, I think she’d be great to tackle this role!
Mr. Waters: This was actually kind of a tricky one for me. Mr. Waters is supposed to be “thin” according to the book and since his mom is described as tall, we assumed that Augustus must get his basketball height from his dad. Tall, thin – I kept picturing someone like Neil Flynn. Although technically Neil Flynn is younger than Patricia Clarkson, I think they could make a nice parental duo! I think that all still works out okay age-wise for him to have had Augustus’s two older sisters as well.
Do you agree with my choices? Who would you have put in these roles? And as for every week, be sure to check out everyone else’s choices! Catch who they picked and show them some comment love too!
Sandie @ Teen Lit Rocks (Augustus Waters and Mr. Lancaster)

When I read your choices I had to laugh because I didn’t think I knew who Neil Flynn was. As I went to google him I actually said to myself, “I pictured him kind of like the dad on The Middle, and I couldn’t stop laughing when I saw who he was! I’m really bad with actors’ names (just ask Sandie). I also like Patricia Clarkson for Augustus’ mom. I think everyone was extra brilliant this week (or I was extra excited about this since I just finished reading the book last Saturday).
Hahaha that’s so funny! Well I’m glad I hit the nail on the head then 🙂
Patricia Clarkson is amazing. In fact, one of my editors is a 33-year-old married man who is positively in love with her (as celeb crushes go). Great picks! When you didn’t settle on John Corbett, I looked up his age and figured, he can be Mr. Lancaster. Thanks for the inspiration!
Haha good, you’re welcome! I’m glad you got to use him for Mr. Lancaster!
I’m really glad I thought of Patricia Clarkson. It was a battle of the Patricias for a while and she was the easy choice 🙂
Patricia Clarkson looks exactly like she could play the sort of mom who has embroidered pillows and saying all over the house! haha, good choice!
Thank you!! 🙂
I love Patricia Clarkson. She is absolutely perfect. And I like Neil Flynn too. I always picture him as Janitor (we are totally having a Scrubs morning. Holla!), but he has been good as the dads he’s played. Well done my friend.
Why thank you! I know, I can’t help but picture him as Janitor, but with such a serious topic, I kind of wanted light-hearted parents. It seems like both Patricia Clarkson and Neil Flynn could pull off both serious and funny for a nice balance. Man, we should really be casting directors! 🙂
This is such a great feature! And Patricia Clarkson would be a fantastic Mrs. Waters! She was so funny in Easy A.
Thank you! I’m really glad you’re enjoying it.
I lover her too! I actually haven’t seen her in that many things that I can remember, but the ones I have, I just loved her !
I would go see this movie just for Patricia Clarkson! She is one of my favorites and I think she’d be perfect for Gus’s mom! I don’t know if I really pictured Neil Flynn for his dad, but man… I do love him! Knife wrench! For kids! Hahaha, favorite Janitor moment! Great choices! 🙂
Hahaha definitely! I love knife wrench hahah
Yeah, Gus’s dad was a hard pick! I picked him based off of a little personality, a little character description and that’s what I came up with lol
I LOVE Patricia Clarkson. just her being in a movie makes me happy. and neil flynn will always be Jan I. Tor to me. great choices!
Thanks!
Haha, I know, I always think of him as the Janitor too, but he’s played a couple dads (Mean Girls, The Middle) so I think he could be a good dad role 🙂
