The Deja Vu Review [7]

The Deja Vu Review is a new Sunday feature with mini-reviews from books I’ve read before I began my blog at The Book Addict’s Guide! Since I’ve been reading my whole life and only started my blog back in April of 2012, this is my opportunity to revisit some older books and share some mini-reviews of those that didn’t quite make it into the blog spotlight after the initial read.

This Week’s Topic: A book that reminds you of your childhood

I’m having a throwback week – All the way back to childhood! This one’s more for pure fun than an actual review, but hey, I can still review kids’ books too, right?

Where the Sidewalk EndsWhere the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
My Childhood Memory: Holidays were always split between our house and my aunt & uncle’s house and my cousin had all of the Shel Silvestein books. I have a bunch of memories of me, my cousin, and my sister sitting around Where the Sidewalk Ends and making the poems into silly songs with her keyboard.

Harriet the SpyHarriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
My Childhood Memory: Yes, I read the book too, but mostly I remember Harriet the Spy, the movie (with Michelle Trachtenberg. Even today, I still think of her as Harriet the Spy). After reading it/seeing the movie, I wanted to be a spy. I took one of the old spiral notebooks that we had and turned it into my spy notebook. I wasn’t too stealthy, but hey, I thought I was cool.

Amelia BedeliaAmelia Bedelia by Peggy Parish
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
My Childhood Memory: I remember reading the Amelia Bedelia with my mom. If you don’t know Amelia Bedelia, basically it’s a literal take on idioms and metaphors, and even as an adult, I can appreciate the humor! I think in one of the books she’s helping with Thanksgiving and the instructions say to dress the turkey so she literally puts clothes on it. I think the book is pretty fun and it’s a great teaching tool for kids to understand those kinds of things at a young age as well as a good beginner’s reading book.

The Monster at the End of this Book (Sesame Street)The Monster at the End of this Book by Jon Stone
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
My Childhood Memory: Ahh, furry old loveable Grover! My mom used to read this book to us when we were kids in the Grover voice and all. I mean, you kind of have to! It makes the book that much more fun. She actually does babysitting now for friends/neighbors as a living and it’s still on the bookshelves and she reads it to the new generations of kids. It’s kind of cool seeing something from my childhood passed down to someone else and I hope these kids make fond memories of it too.

I like the topic this week – because it could be easily parsed into banned books which is what I am featuring on my blog – so many books that remind me of my childhood are on the list
