My Latest Bookish Addiction [1]

Hey book lovers! In keeping with the theme of my blog, I decided to start bringing you updates of the newest and greatest bookish addictions in my life so I can share with you some awesomely bookish things or discuss if maybe we share the same bookish loves. It seemed like a great way to get a little discussion going in a very relaxed way.

This Edition’s Bookish Addiction? Thrift Stores.

No, not that Thrift Shop…. Well, actually yeah, kind of (And thanks to Magan & Rachel, by the way, for helping me realize this was a real song. I only saw a cover YouTube video before that and thought that was it haha)

Anyway, what I’m really talking about it finding some great reads at thrift stores, mainly Goodwill and Savers in my area. Goodwill especially has been an AWESOME way to find used books for not a lot of money. I think the paperbacks are less than a dollar and hardcovers are a little bit more so I’ve picked up some surprisingly recent titles for not a lot of money. The nice thing about Goodwill too is that they’re totally non-profit so I feel like my money is going to a good place (although I do still like my money going to places who do profit and run a business like independent bookstores).
Savers is the same idea as Goodwill – All of their proceeds go to supporting other local non-profits as well as charities so I like to feel like I’m helping charities by reading, if you think about it like that!

Let me just say… Good, cheap books? They are SO hard to resist. Ever since I first found a few good and rather recent releases at the thrift store, I’m just drawn in and dying to discover what else has popped up since I was last there!

Boxes_edited-2I’ve also found a couple other cool bookish things at thrift stores that I didn’t even know were out there like these cute little book boxes. They’re a medium to small size and don’t hold too much but I thought they were really adorable, looking like two antique books and opening up to hold some bookish secrets inside! They were actually falling apart just a bit around the edges (they’re actually bound by leather (okay, I’m guessing it’s a fake leather substitute – pleather? – but something like it)) so I just took a hot glue gun rather quickly to the loose edges and they were as good as new!

I’ve also been able to find some older books that were falling apart that quite pained me to dismantle, but I used them for some fun bookish crafts (which I don’t have any pictures for because let’s be honest… It was a Pinterest project that went sour).

So what do you guys think of my latest bookish addiction? Have you found any good reads at the thrift shop? Any other bookish goodies to decorate your house? I can’t wait to hear what kind of treasures you’ve found!

I’m addicted to book shopping in all forms, but Thrift stores are dangerous for me. I’m not going to ever turn down a $2 book that I MIGHT want to read someday. (Yep – there are 3 Norman Mailer books on my shelves right now). Or a $2 copy of a book I already own but my copy is signed. It’s nice to have a lendable copy you know? This is why I own 2 copies of Fangirl and 3 copies of E&P.

I love browsing the bookshelves at Goodwill! I also have an Ollies Bargain Outlet near me and they are THE BEST for YA books. I can often get new-ish releases (within a year or two) there for $2-$3.

I wish there were more thrift stores near me! There’s a really small one in town, but they don’t have books there. The cheapest place I could probably find books is at a library sale, but they only have those once a year in my neck of the woods. Those little book boxes are adorable, though!

I went into Goodwill for the first time a few weeks ago. Walked out with 12 books for under 20$! I am now a huge fan and will be sure to peruse all my local thrift shops. My library also has a pretty large second hand bookstore, and I need to check that out as soon as I get the time. I’m always a fan of super cheap books.

YES! I don’t know why more people don’t do stuff like this!! It’s a lot more work but holy cow I’ve found some seriously cheap books at thrift stores and most of them aren’t in horrible condition!
Yay for spreading the word! =)

I LOVE Goodwill – they have so many good books, most of the time and I also love library bookstores. It is how I can try a new author without spending tons of money. I can’t name all the authors I tried for 50 cents and am now addicted to. They are good but dangerous. These are the reason my TBR is a mountain prone to avalanche! 🙂 Have fun

Haha YES. Dangerous is the perfect word! I have stacks of books from thrift stores that aren’t even a priority and I bought WAY too many!

I would love to go to some thrift stores in my area to find other EDITIONS of books … like the classics. I collected way too many mass market paperback-type classics in university and I want some more special editions for my collection. They can be a great way to find some cheap books, too!

Any thrift shop that I’ve ever visited with books has been disappointing. BUT a new, big one just opened up near me, so I’m going to check it out tomorrow – I’ve heard it has a big book section. Fingers crossed!

Yay! I haven’t been to the thrift store to look for books, but maybe I should check it out! Our library has a book store where people donate books/old, retired library books go and I shop there A LOT. Everything is $1-2, so definitely in my book hoarding price range and, best of all, once a month they have stuff a sack Saturday, where it’s $20 for all the books your bag can hold! I really like this new feature; definitely looking forward to some of your other obsessions! 🙂

Thanks, Candice!! I feel like this one has the potential to stick 🙂
Ooooh all the books you can fit in a bag!? That would be awesome!

    Your book safes are awesome!

I am a huge fan of buying second hand books. Lifeline (a charity here) hold GIANT second hand book sales a few times a year. I normally spend around $30 and end up with around 20 or so novels of a fair quality that I want to read.

Oh yes, I’ve found TONS of good reads in thrift shops!! The price can’t be beat, and the selection is actually surprisingly good at times.

I used to find a lot of good YA books at the Goodwill in Naperville, and the Savers there too, but I don’t want to pay $3 for a used book that’s not in perfect condition, especially if it’s paperback. After Boarders closed, alot of the books left over were donated, so I remember finding a ton of awesome books to add to my collection.
