My Latest Bookish Addiction [4]

MLBA

In keeping with the theme of my blog, I decided to start bringing you updates of the newest and greatest bookish addictions in my life so I can share with you some awesomely bookish things or discuss if maybe we share the same bookish loves. It seemed like a great way to get a little discussion going in a very relaxed way.

This Edition’s Bookish Addiction? Sneaking a peek under dust jackets on hardcovers.

Well first things first… It’s been a LONG time since I’ve done an edition of My Latest Bookish Addiction… Like two months *gasp!* BUT that’s because Book and a Beverage has just been taking off so well! I started reading a new book this weekend (Let the Sky Fall by Shannon Messenger) and once again, I took a peek under the book’s dust jacket to see what the actual hardback looks like. I’m not sure when this started but I’ve been doing that a lot lately!

I love dust jackets. I actually keep them on while I read my books (half the time I use the flaps as my bookmark/to hold my spot), so even though sometimes they slip and get in the way, I’m one of those people who keeps them on… But recently I realized that means that half the time I don’t even know what the actual BOOK looks like. We have pretty artwork and list lovely paper that covers the book, but I don’t actually see the book and sometimes there are some pretty cool THINGS under there or a different color than I was expecting.

So it’s no secret that I LOOOOVE the cover for THE RAVEN BOYS… but have you ever looked under the jacket? The actual cover has the SYMBOL imprinted into the actual cover. I loved peeking behind the jacket and seeing that little surprise!

I ALSO love the cover for THROUGH THE EVER NIGHT but underneath the jacket is this gorgeous teal blue embossed lettering of the cover.

IMG_1484    IMG_1485

MEANT TO BE’s cover is soooo pretty with all of those colors and rays of light, but underneath, the hardback is a combination of blue and white with some pretty pink lettering! (Pardon that ugly living room carpet…)

My hardback of DELIRIUM is one of the older ones (I think?) and SURPRISE!!!! Look what’s underneath the jacket! I actually hadn’t peeked under the dust jacket for the longest time so I was really actually quite shocked to see this un-traditional PICTURE on the actual cover! It’s actually pretty cool the image that is bleeding through the text on the jacket is actually underneath!

SIEGE AND STORM’s cover is also amazing (duh) and although I seriously took a horrible picture of the book underneath the jacket, it’s got the dragon on the spine and the castle embossed on the front cover. So much love for everything about this!!!

Is it just me, or does anyone else love to peek under the dust jacket? If you haven’t, maybe you should start! Some hardbacks are just simple and sweet, but others have quite a few neat goodies under there!!! Other times it’s just nice to know what’s going on.

If you find any good secret things under and dust jackets, let me know!! I’d love to know what I’m missing.

This post is SO me. The first thing I do when a book comes in is take the dust jacket off and see if there’s something special underneath. (This really gets me excited! Especially when books are very pretty underneath.) I love the UTNS/TTEN hardcovers, and the Delirium cover (I have another one actually) is so cool! I heard Pushing the Limits/Dare You To have the same thing, actually. Some of my favorites are Shatter Me (the hardcover has a line in silver letters on the cover), the Lorien Legacies books (which have cool marks on the front) and the Delirium series (same). OH and Golden, which is so cool!

I rarely take dust jackets off…because I’m afraid I will lose them. And I borrow many books from the library, so I can’t peek. *cries*
Seeing this post, I am reminded of Gabrielle Zevin’s All These Things I’ve Done. And it was chocolate bar underneath!

Oh no, do they seal those library covers on too tightly!? 🙁
I haven’t read that book but I LOVE that that’s what’s under the dust jacket! How cool!

Yep, they double tape the dust jacket onto the hardcover. *pouts*

The book is about a society where chocolate is outlawed, so chocolate has to be hidden–hence the hardcover. It’s actually kinda brilliant. =)

Yes! I love to peek under the dust jacket 🙂 I like simple covers and often like the actual cover a lot more than the dust jacket cover 🙂

THIS IS SO COOL! You make me want to pick under the dust jacket of all of my books! Unfortunately I get most of my books from the library so that list is pretty limited hah but I am totally going to do this 😀 The picture on the Delirium cover is so neat1! Especially since I would never have expected that! Awesome post!

These are all so gorgeous! And you are not alone, in every vlog where I share a new hardcover book, I take off the jacket and have a peek underneath! My latest fave is Wild Awake – it’s beautiful!

This is actually something I LOVE doing! When I carry my hardcovers out of the house to read on my commutes, I almost always have the dust covers off so I get to see the pretty book beneath. I love the ones you’ve featured here, but I’m particularly fond of Siege & Storm AND The Raven Boys!

I tend to take off my book jackets when I read simply because I don’t want them to get damaged. I love dust jackets; I think they’re so pretty. And I love that there’s still another part of the book under them. I love love love that Delirium one. That’s the edition I read of the book (although I got mine from the library and thus did not notice the AMAZING image underneath). Seriously, very pretty! I also like hardcovers with shiny text and bold colors. 🙂

Yay, I love this post! Peeking under the dust jackets is always fun for me too. Sometimes I take them off and I’m just like WOW! Unfortunately my memory is horrible so I can’t even recall the ones that really wowed me (I should pay more attention or take better notes or something!). I had no idea the hardcover of Delirium looked so great underneath the dust jacket, though! I love when they do that. 😀

Oh, I’m one of those people who can’t read a book with the jacket on so I always take it off. It’s always fun to see what’s underneath! I think one of my favorites has to be this cover of Daughter of Smoke and Bone. I love that it’s like their dust jacket cover, but sketched which works perfectly for Karou. I think more book publishers should hide stuff under the jackets!

I usually don’t look under the jacket…so now I know I definitely should.
But I did somehow peeked underneath the jacket of Why We Broke Up…and it has a white cover illustrated with what looks like red rose petals, quite pretty.

I love looking at what’s under a dust jacket. I think The Program image is one of my favorites.

It’s funny, because I’ve always thought it was a cool thing to do, but when in my old job selling books it used to make me and the other sales people so angry because in some cases printing on the case can increase the unit cost and possibly the cost of the book and we were always trying to keep prices down.

Those hardbacks are GORGEOUS! I had no idea the old cover for delirium looked like that underneath!! Two of my recent favorites are The Program & Dare To You… they are freaking AMAZING underneath 🙂 I also love the hardcover for A Need So Beautiful… I’m not sure why, it’s fairly simple but it’s soooo beautiful to me! Great topic 🙂

I actually don’t read a lot of hardcovers, but when I do read one that I own, I typically take the dust jacket off. The last one I looked at was Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi, and it has a really pretty shade of pink on it, the spine, I think.

I do love to look under the jackets! I have done that for a really long time and I always check them out before I buy a book (though not liking whats under the jacket won’t hinder me from buying it) and it is a habit I always do. I like the underneath cover for Incarnate because it has a pretty butterfly on it and as you can tell by the butterfly mask on the cover art, the butterfly isa symbol of the story. I am so glad that the plain black covers under the jackets are getting rarer!

I’ve always looked under the jacket for embossments. Usually HarperTeen books have them, and Scholastic books (or at least Maggie Steifvater books). I love when it’s a symbol. Have you seem the ones on Incarnate and Asunder? The butterfly and flower are pretty detailed and awesome. Most of the time it’s just the title that’s embossed. Like on the Unearthly series, and Paranormalcy.
