Top Ten Tuesday – July 9, 2013: Top Ten Best or Worst Movie Adaptations

TTT

It’s Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by the wonderful blog at The Broke and the Bookish!
This week’s topic: Top Ten Best or Worst Movie Adaptations

Harry Potter. Are you even surprised? <3

THE HUNGER GAMES

THE PRINCESS BRIDE: The book and the movie are almost identical. LOVE IT.

THE NOTEBOOK: I liked the movie better than the book, to be honest…

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA

THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS: Maybe not the greatest adaptation, but I love the movie.

LITTLE WOMEN: ’nuff said.

THE BABY SITTERS CLUB: Hell to the yes.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST: I’m actually not sure I’ve read the original story, but Beauty and the Beast may be one of my favorite movies of all time. Had to go on the list.

MATILDA

CHARLIE/WILLA WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY: I never saw the creepy Johnny Depp adaptation. I mean…. Gene Wilder. Come on.

JUMANJI: Remember back when I was surprised that Jumanji was a book? Silly me. We had this read to us back in the day when we had library class and we say on carpet squares.

Shame on me because I love these movies BUT haven’t read the books they’re adapted from… SHAME!

A LITTLE PRINCESS
WHITE OLEANDER
MUPPET TREASURE ISLAND
ANNE OF GREEN GABLES

The movies I DIDN’T think were adapted well…

The Twilight Saga: Do I love the books? Yes. Did I love the movies? Yes. Did I think they were well done? Hell no. I said goodbye to the Twilight Saga when the last movie came out and went on a min-rant… Eh. I still enjoyed them. What can you say!
One for the Money: I went and saw the movie and… Eh. I love Katherine Heigl but that was not my Joe Morelli. I just think it didn’t quite make a good movie and I feel like it kind of flopped. So sad!
Confessions of a Shopaholic: Love Isla Fisher as well but……… Becky is British. The fact that it was adapted as an American movie, okay fine. But it just threw me off. There were some little things that got changed that I didn’t think needed to be and… Eh. The movie did not catch me.
The Nanny Diaries: I can’t remember why I disliked this movie so much… I think it didn’t follow the book very closely, if I remember correctly. I remember being upset!
The Lovely Bones: I actually wasn’t in love with the book, but the movie just seemed….. weird.
Water for Elephants: I never even finished this movie. I really liked the book and it was interesting but I never, ever saw Reece Witherspoon as the lead character. It was just weird that she was so much older than Robert Pattinson and that’s not how I saw it at all. I just never got into the movie and didn’t even finish it.
One Day: I actually the book BECAUSE the movie was coming out…… And another movie I didn’t finish. I love Anne Hathaway, I really like Jim Sturgess…. But Anne Hathaway was also not a believable Brit and I didn’t get their chemistry together. Eh.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: LOVED these books but I tried to watch the movie and it was 1) boring because I knew everything that happened, taking all of the mystery/suspense out of it and 2) really hard to watch. I’m sure if you’ve read the books (maybe if you haven’t, even) that there’s some pretty graphic stuff that happens in these books. Just not an easy thing to watch, personally. I actually wanted to watch the original Swedish version but Netflix didn’t have subtitles for me haha.

Okay, so once again…. I cheated. But I had so much to talk about! Which movie adaptations are your favorite? Any movies I stopped watching that you think I should try to finish?

I loved that you included so many kid movies! But shame on me because I haven’t read most of the books they were based on. Still, Matilda? AWESOME. Willy Wonka? Gotta love Gene Wilder (though I still love Johnny Depp as well). And wait, they made a Babysitter’s Club movie?! How the heck did I miss that?!

Just thinking about ONE DAY makes me SAD. I really wanted to love it, but it fell flat for me. I mean, I’m an Anne Hathaway fan, but really, this wasn’t her best 🙁

Agree. One For the Money fell short. I read Notebook & Water for Elephants so I could go see the movie & never did. I saw the Sweedish version of the first GW Dragon Tattoo. It was good & dark. It fit the book, but the book is better because you get the inner dialogue.

Love that you included so many childrens books!! <3
Ha… every time I see anything about The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants it reminds of when I went to see the movie. I bought a small popcorn, which was in a bag rather than a tub… and the butter leaked through onto my pants. I was so embarrassed. hahaha
Right with ya on Twilight… obviously not done well, but I LOVED THEM and I own that! hahaha

How did I forget about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?!?! I LOVE that book and the movie! The Gene Wilder one… not the Johnny Depp one, despite how much I love him.

OH MY GOD! THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA! I thought to put that on my list, told myself to write it down so I didn’t forget but of course I didn’t, and then I didn’t remember it until I read your post right now. Sorry, I just can’t believe I forgot that.

Good call with The Notebook and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. I can’t believe I forgot those, but at least I never thought of them in the first place 🙂

Gotta say I also enjoyed the movie of The Notebook better than the book as well. I was actually kind of disappointed when I finally read it since I really wanted to cry for it, and it didn’t make me want to at all, but the movie does every time. I just watched The Princess Bride again recently and I really need to get the book so I can read it 🙂

HOW did I forget Little Women?!? I LOVED that movie so much when I was younger! I wanted to be Jo badly haha. GREAT choices!!! And I agree with you about The Lovely Bones. I actually loved the book, but the movie was just bizarre!

so much to love here. i liked the Nanny Diaries, but never saw the movie. I loved Little Women, too. I think Claire Danes as Beth was great. and of course I agree with HP & HG.

YES Harru Potter, of course!!! Out of the 8 movies, I think Prisoner of Azkaban was the best adaptation; it was perfect. Ah, I haven’t read the original Beauty and the Beast but it’s also one of my favorite movies ever…Belle and I are basically the same person.

The Babysitter’s Club movie was actually filmed in my University town in Canada which is pretty cool :). I adore that movie. Alan was so adorable! I haven’t seen the Little Women movie, but I used to watch the cartoon when I was younger. Christian Bale is Laurie in the movie right?

The original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was wonderful 🙂

I love that you put the Muppets Treasure Island on here! I like all the Muppets movies more than I care to admit(is it bad that my degree is in English but I still consider the Muppets version of A Christmas Carol my favorite movie version of the story?), I actually have tried to read Treasure Island and was hopelessly bored by the second chapter.
