My Latest Bookish Addiction [9] – Swoony Snark

MLBA

In keeping with the theme of my blog, I decided to start bringing you updates of the newest and greatest bookish addictions in my life so I can share with you some awesomely bookish things or discuss if maybe we share the same bookish loves. It seemed like a great way to get a little discussion going in a very relaxed way.

This Edition’s Bookish Addiction? Swoony Snark

Screw the days of White Knights. I want my Prince Charming to be completely sarcastic and utterly witty with a streak of adventure and let me tell you, NOBODY knows how to write these guys better than today’s YA writers. I feel no shame in admitting that I’m in love with a few fictional characters because they’ve just stolen my heart with their brilliance and boldness and I can’t get enough of the japes, the jokes, and the borderline arrogance (just as long as it doesn’t go TOO far). Give me a Han Solo or an Indiana Jones (apparently any Harrison Ford character…?) any day! I have many, many book boyfriends, but these scoundrels are the ones who stole my heart… Just to name a few:

ThorneScarlet (The Lunar Chronicles #2) – Marissa Meyer
My Latest Bookish Addition [8] – The Lunar Chronicles

Well, after finishing CRESS, Carswell Thorne tops the list. He’s funny and cocky, but also has a gentle and protective side. I’m SO glad we got to see him as more of a main character in CRESS and more of his story. Marissa Meyer wrote him perfectly and he is definitely my top book boyfriend of all time, at the moment.
Quote: A relieved grin filled up Thorne’s face. “We’re having another moment, aren’t we?”

Swoon Level: Sci-Fi Snark
 Han Solo

lines

SturmhondSiege and Storm (The Grisha #2) – Leigh Bardugo

Leigh Bardugo’s character Sturmhond, who first appears in SIEGE AND STORM, is another top top top choice. I love his banter with Alina and even the conflict with Mal, which I usually don’t enjoy. He’s confident, but not cocky, and his sense of adventure surely drives the book forward!
Quote: “I can’t decide if you’re crazy or stupid.”
“I have so many good qualities,” Sturmhond said. “It can be hard to choose.”

Swoon Level: Adventure Snark
Captain Jack Sparrow mixed with Indiana Jones

lines

duvalGrave Mercy (His Fair Assassin #1) – Robin LaFevers

Duval was not only chivalrous, but he was kind, dashing, and a whole lot of swoony. I love his clever with and sharp tongue I swooned for him right from the start. Just looking up quotes has me itching for a re-read!
Quote: “I will sit here but an hour or two, then leave.”
I yawn. “So very long as that?”
When he answers, there is a wry note in his voice. “I do have my reputation to protect.”

Swoon Level: Historical Snark
Ichabod Crane

lines

adrian
BloodlinesThe Golden Lily, The Indigo Spell
The Bloodlines Series by Richelle Mead

I actually wasn’t super swoony over Adrian in the Vampire Academy series because I had Dimitri-blindness, but I really got to love him once I started Bloodlines! I really love seeing that rich-boy swagger mixed with a sensitive side that he doesn’t want anyone to really know about. Add all of the snarkiness in there and you KNOW I was sold!
Quote: “You look confused,” said Adrian.
I shook my head and sighed. “I think I’m just overthinking things.”
He nodded solemnly. “That’s why I try to never do it.”

Swoon Level: Trust Fund Snark
Chuck Bass

lines

jasonMeant To Be – Lauren Morrill

Jason Lippincott from MEANT TO BE is a character that grows on you. Practical jokes, typical boy humor, and a whole lot of mischief turn off MC Julia, but as the book goes on, both Julia and I found a soft spot in our hearts for him!
Quote: “Holy crap, is that a bathtub at the foot of your bed? That’s awesome! Can I join?”
“Hilarious.”

Swoon Level: Goofy Snark
Chandler Bing

lines

dayLegend by Marie Lu (review to come!)

Well, I just finished LEGEND and LOVED IT. I really loved Day too! He’s smart, quick on his feet and also quick witted. He wasn’t super snarky in LEGEND but he and June has some nice banter which I always love! It makes me even more excited to continue on with the rest of the series too!
Quote: “You’re very attractive.”
I’ve been complimented on my appearance before. But never in his tone of voice. Of all the things he’s said, I don’t know why this catches me off guard. But it startles me so much that without thinking I blurt out, “I could say the same about you.” I pause. “In case you didn’t know.”
A slow grin spreads across his face. “Oh, trust me. I know.”

Swoon Level: Survivalist Snark
Sawyer mixed with the athleticism of Jason Bourne

lines

emilio

I totally swooned over Emilio in THE BOOK OF BROKEN HEARTS. He was sly, witty, and FORBIDDEN *fans self* I really loved his interactions with Jude and how their relationship developed! Definitely swoon-worthy for me!
Quotes: “Emilio smiled, and it was like, stubble, dimples, scar. Damn.”

 Swoon Level: Bad Boy Snark
Phil from The Hangover

lines

I swoon for snark! Who are your favorite literary scoundrels? Anyone on this list that you would have included that I missed?

YESSSSS, omg give me a snarky/swoony book boyfriend any day and I’m a goner. Sturmhond and Thorne are definitely at the top of my own list. I can’t wait for Ruin and Rising / Cress!! And I just finished Susan Ee’s World After, and have to add Raffe to the list too. He’s not quite as laid back all the time, but his snarky moments are PRICELESS. XD Also also, not a leading love interest, but Roar from Under the Never Sky! His whole joking attitude, paired with his loyalty and steadfastness with his friends… I just can’t. One of my all-time favorite characters.

Also, congratulations – with a single mention of Ichabod Crane, you have convinced me that I need to read His Fair Assassin. *_*

I adore this post so, so much! And this is DEFINITELY a bookish addiction that you and I share — so it’s cool. I love Thorne, or at least, what I know of him from Scarlet, and I can’t wait to re-meet him in Cress! And I do have a soft spot for Sturmhond too, and I need MORE of him in my life. All these other guys you mentioned, particularly the ones I have yet to encounter, sound like guys I’d very much want to meet…

(P.S. Those swoon levels + GIFs make me SO HAPPY!)

Seriously, you have named three of my biggest crushes in YA: Sturmhond, Duval & Thorne <3 I love sarcastic, snarky guys, those are the best! Duval is so clever, Sturmhond is great with his flirtations and Thorne makes me laugh.

    1) I think you’d enjoy the leading man in my lately completed NaNo novel.
    (Gosh knows /I’ve/ enjoyed him…
    *insert his inevitable rejoinder here*)

    2) I screamed a little at the sight of the Crane GIF. Or maybe I just jumped and grinned madly and stopped breathing. I don’t remember. I may have blacked out. Craaaaane…

Oh my. I love snarky boys. They are my favorite. So glad that you loved Legend. It’s my fav dystopian series. I’m in love with Day. He’s got just a tiny bit of snark, but he’s also so good and that’s what I love about him. Gavriel Duval from Grave Mercy. So sarcastic and funny. I fell in love with him immediately. I also love Will Herondale. He can be pretty snarky and Magnus Bane who just a teensy bit arrogant. Also, I love Chuck Bass so thanks for putting a gif of him in this post. Gossip Girl was like my guilty pleasure. Love that show. I may own every single season on DVD… There are so many snarky, sexy boys in YA. Awesome post!

Agree with so many of your choices here, especially Adrian. I feel the same way, I didn’t really care for him in VA, he was just in the way, but I absolutely adore him in Bloodlines series! And yes, Jason from Meant To Be, he was hilarious and so realistic, actually. Based on your choices, I would recommend Daemon from the Lux series (complete swoony snark) and of course Will from Infernal Devices and Jace from Mortal Instruments. Fun post!

Ooooh I will have to try the Lux series!
I’m so glad to hear a similar opinion on Adrian! I liked him enough in VA but didn’t understand the swoons until Bloodlines 🙂

Oh man, YES. So in general, I’ve never really been one to pay particular attention/have fictional or celebrity crushes. Like even in HS, when my friends would talk about attractive actors and stuff, I’d always be like “Eh, I guess.” I’ve been that way with book/TV/movie characters too. BUT THEN THE SNARK HAPPENED. Like brooding bad boys? I’ll pass. The good boy next door? MAYBE. . . maybe. Depending on the character(ahem, Peeta). But the swoony snark? YES, keep making more of these characters please, creators!

Though, I obviously need to read more of these books because I’ve only read Scarlet from this list. Though, I mean, can you REALLY do better than Thorne? Like I said, I’m not always one to swoon over fictional characters, and there are only two characters I can really think of that I would TOTALLY crush on if they were real, and that would be Peeta and THORNE. Because I LOVE him.

Also, I really need to read Grave Mercy if you pair it with a Ichabod GIF, for obvious reasons.

YAYYYY! Honestly? You really can’t get much better than Thorne, although Sturmhond is a close second for me! 🙂 Ahhh YES read Grave Mercy!!!!! Serious swoons and super badass!

Excellent post Brittany and definitely got me thinking! I’d maybe add Po from Graceling to the list as well as Raffe from Angelfall, Eric from True Blood before Charlaine Harris ruined the series…I feel like I’m missing someone really obvious but those are all I can think of for now! 🙂

OOOOOH I forgot all about Po! He would totally be a good candidate. I was stuck in a YA mindset and forgot about Eric because he’s so perfect too!
