A short story detailing the incident referenced by Carswell Thorne between himself and Kate Fallow and the great retrieval of her port screen. A glimpse at the young Carswell Thorne, his family life, and his teenage years. Appearing exclusively in the Target copy of CRESS.
WHAT I LIKED
-
THORNE. Always Thorne. Hell, I bought a whole second copy of Cress just to have the Thorne short story.
- Family roots. Marissa Meyer could have easily just fit this story at school but I really appreciated that we saw some of his family life as well. It was interesting to see his relationship with his parents and how that actually shaped him into the person he became.
- Swoon. I was hoping for more, but I love that Thorne has always had that charm! He surely was never short on charm with the ladies. Even teachers!
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE
- These books are always just too short!!! I could read a whole full-length novel about Carswell Thorne or even a longer novella since this one was only maybe a chapter or two.
- I know the nature of the book is to be a brief glimpse into the life of Thorne, but I was just hoping for a little bit more! I didn’t QUITE make that connection that I have with some of Marissa Meyer’s other novellas.
This one was so short that it’s hard to form detailed thoughts, but as always, Marissa Meyer’s stories in any form are always fun! Although I will admit, I’m ALWAYS hoping for more Thorne!

This was such a cute short story.
I read it off Marissa Meyer’s email newsletter. 😉 So I didn’t need to buy anything! Huzzah!
I want more on Carswell. He’s such a cool character
I just love the title of this novella! I never read novellas though, but I have the Throne of Glass novellas I vow to read at some point, and if I was to read any others it would definitely be the novellas for this series! I’ll get on that eventually. 🙂 Love Thorne 🙂
Ha, I love what you put down as the source! I seriously might cave one day myself.
I haven’t read ANY of Meyer’s novellas, because I’m afraid that they will just leave me wanting more and more and more, because she’s that amazing! But I think I should devote a day to reading all the novellas. 🙂
Also, Carswell Thorne! I’m not usually into really charming guys, because I always feel like they are up to no good. And, a lot of the time Thorne is up to no good. But in the best possible way, and usually with decent reasonings behind his antics.
THORNEEEE! I’m sorry it wasn’t longer as well! I mean, I haven’t read it, but hello, I’d read a whole book about him. I can’t wait to see what little Thorne was like. I love that he charms the teachers. That’s so him. (Because he’s real and I know him personally, obvs, so I can speak to the truth of it.)
