TOP TEN TUESDAY
August 4, 2015
It’s Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by the wonderful blog at The Broke and the Bookish! This week’s topic was Top Ten Fairy Tale Retellings & Adaptations but I haven’t read enough strictly fairy tale retellings so I’m going with ANY retellings & adaptations!
I love a good fairy tale retelling or adaptation! We all grew up with Disney and The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin were my prime years. Fairy tales hold a special place in my heart and I especially enjoy adaptations because it’s so fun to see those parallels and also how the stories are told anew!
I’ve also read quite a few great adaptations that have nothing to do with fairy tales and more to do with classics or other stories!
THE LUNAR CHRONICLES by Marissa Meyer
We all know that The Lunar Chronicles is one of my all-time FAVORITE series (I AM hosting a read along for it right now, after all) and they’re some of my favorite retellings too. I love how the books are adapted as fairy tales but they’re also VERY much their own stories. They’re just a blast to read.
A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES by Sarah J. Maas
I fell in love with Sarah J. Maas’s books last year and I’m so happy with adaptations involved in ACOTAR! It as advertised as a Beauty and the Beast adaptation but there were hints of other fairy tales as well and like so many others, also very much its own story!
TIGER LILY by Jodi Lynn Anderson
TIGER LILY was beauuuutiful. I still need to do a re-read of this book because it was just gorgeous! This is more a of retelling, I think, because it directly deals with the fairy tale of Peter Pan and Tiger Lily’s story.
THE TROUBLE WITH FLIRTING by Claire LaZebnik
I did not expect to love this book and it was just SO enjoyable! It’s a retelling of Mansfield Park which I’ve never read so I can’t really say how well it was adapted or how loyal it is but the book was adorable and I just had so much fun reading it!
THE SCARLET TRILOGY by A.C. Gaughen
I think SCARLET was my favorite of this series but they were all really interesting! They’re adaptations of Robin Hood and I really loved how they tied into the original tale but again, were their own stories in themselves. Really great characters and some nice twists!
THE FALL by Bethany Griffin
THE FALL is a retelling of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher and while I don’t really know the original Poe tale inside and out, this book was so delightfully creepy! I loved how the setting really came to life… literally!
THIS DARK ENDEAVOR by Kenneth Oppel
Frankenstein adaptation? Don’t mind if I do! This one goes back a bit more into the adolescence of Dr. Frankenstein so don’t expect it to parallel the version you know! It was really interesting though, and I’m actually really curious to see where the second book goes! I might read it during Halloweentime this year.
ANTIGODDESS by Kendare Blake
I used to be SUCH a sucker for mythology so I really enjoyed seeing all of that come to life! I actually loved that it wasn’t just one specific story from Greek/Roman mythology but a bunch of gods and goddesses coming together! This is another one I need to catch up on but I really enjoyed the first book!
THE RED PYRAMID by Rick Riordan
This is actually the only Rick Riordan book I’ve read to date — I know, I know — and I really enjoyed it! Some more mythology but this time Egyptian! Even though it’s more middle grade and that’s not usually my style, I really enjoyed the book and it extended to much older audiences well, I think!

OH MY I love retellings. A lot! It’s a big chunk of what I read. I loved the Lunar Chronicles like crazy, but that wasn’t what had me ecstatic after reading this post! It was the fact that there is a Mansfield Park retelling that I have never heard of. That’s actually my all time favourite classic so I have added the retelling to my TBR and am intrigued to see what it will be like.
I need to read, like, all of these. Except the last one. The Red Pyramid is the only RR book I wasn’t a fan of! His other series are great though (:
Ohhh a Frankenstein tale! Sounds interesting; I always thought Victor was more intriguing than the monster. He annoys me to no end, but all his twisted thoughts make for good discussion in lit class haha.
Great choices! I love the Lunar Chronicles too! I still need to read Cress before the release of Winter. I have had Tiger Lily on my TBR forever and everyone is raving about it today. I definitely need to read it soon! 🙂
I love that you also included mythology! I’ve added a few to my fairytale TBR list!
Of course I love The Lunar Chronicles too. That series just grabs me immediately.
I didn’t know that there was a re-telling of Peter Pan?! I’ve always heard people raving about Tiger Lily and I never got around to checking what it was about because I’m lazy, and I really don’t have an excuse. BUT off I go to add it to my TBR. I’ve also really been wanting to read the Scarlet series, as I LOVE the idea of a Robin Hood re-telling, also I’ve heard so many good things about it! Great list! 🙂
I love retellings too, all kinds! But fairy tales are usually my favorite 🙂 Love Ella Enchanted, Lunar Chronicles, Stitching Snow, ACOTAR, Cruel Beauty, Grounded, A Curse Dark as Gold, Entwined. Haven’t found a Little Mermaid or Aladdin retelling I like yet but I’ll keep looking 🙂 Ooh I have The Trouble With Flirting! Mansfield Park is my least favorite Austen novel but I’ve heard the retelling is fab. I also love Scarlet and For Darkness Shows The Stars. Give me all the retellings!!! Hehe 🙂 Awesome post Brittany.
I love the Lunar Chronicles of course, but I also love Jane Austen retellings and fan fiction. I hadn’t heard of The Trouble with Flirting. I’ll have to check that out.
Great list! I think the only one we have in common is The Lunar Chronicles. I still need to read Scarlet, which is shameful.
I just read A Court of Thorn and Roses and I LOVED it so, so, so much!! And of course, the entire Lunar Chronicles series is on my list as well. I really need to check out Antigoddess. I have always been a sucker for Greek mythology. I love it and that one sounds really interesting.
Niiiice! Seeing Lunar Chronicles everywhere today! I love that series too, though I think I subconsciously refrained from selecting that one because I knew soooo many people would be picking it! LOL! I looove Tiger Lily though! Glad to see that one around a lot today! Great picks!
Here’s my Tuesday Post
Have a GREAT day!
Old Follower 🙂
The Lunar Chronicles and Scarlet made my list too! Such awesome books.
I hadn’t even thought of including Jane Austen retellings – love that!
Great list, girl!
