Book and a Beverage [128] – Natalie from Food for Bookworms

Book and a Beverage

Welcome back to BOOK AND A BEVERAGE!

In case you don’t know the deal about Book and a Beverage, it’s a very simple yet fun feature: We read books, we drink beverages, we take pictures of them and then I share your photos and a little about you to the blogging world!

Give a big welcome to Natalie from Food for Bookworms!

Name & Blog Name:  Natalie from Food for Bookworms
Tell us a little about your blog! Food for Bookworms came into existence because I felt a little bereft of literary conversation after finishing my English degree 4 or so years ago! Obviously when studying literature everyone on your course is reading the same texts as you so there’s plenty of conversation to be had but after leaving uni that’s no longer the case. So I created my blog in the hopes that if I shared what I was reading and what I thought of it others would join in too (and maybe I’d meet some other book obsessives in the process)!
What’s been your favorite post you’ve written so far? (Link us up!)
This isn’t actually a review (I’m not sure what that says about my reviewing skills!) but I think I’ve chosen this one more for its personal connection to me. I really like this account of my visit to the Brontë Museum in Haworth. Wuthering Heights is my all-time favourite book and it was like a dream come true to visit the place that inspired it all and see where Emily Brontë wrote it. It was also insightful and very affecting to learn about the sisters’ lives and the tragedies that afflicted the family.
Got anything special coming up we should know about? Nothing too special as I only had a blog redesign a few months ago! I do plan to nail my TBR pile on the head this year though so that could mean either I end up giving away many books or a very varied selection of reviews coming up!

book

Whatcha reading? War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy. Although it’s around 1000 pages long so I’m actually breaking my usual reading habits and reading other books in tandem with this one….
Where did it come from? (Library, purchased, publisher, etc):
It was a birthday present from my parents last year (that I asked for after learning that the BBC were producing a new adaptation).
Any special reason you chose to feature this book? War and Peace is one of those books I’ve always “meant” to read but just have never got round to (due to its intimidating length) so I’m pretty pleased with myself for attempting it! Also now seems like the perfect time to read it as you can read along with the series. I’d love to hear other people’s thoughts if they’re reading it at the moment too!
What’s important that we should know about this book? Would you recommend it? I would say…definitely don’t be intimidated as I was. I’m enjoying it so much now I’ve gotten into it and I’m looking forward to seeing how the BBC series compares (I’ve heard some “interesting” things about some of the relationships). The only issue I had was with remembering who was who but copies usually have lists of the families at the beginning and after the first few chapters you suss it out.

beverage

Whatcha drinking? A strong cup of Yorkshire Tea with almond milk. My boyfriend is a proud Yorkshireman so he weaned me onto “proper” tea and now I drink it like water!
What’s your favorite thing to drink while reading? If I’m allowed to be a little luxurious it would have to be a big mug of toffee nut latte from Starbucks. It makes me sad (but probably good for my purse) that I can only have it for a few months a year… And I love cozying up and reading in a coffee shop — it has just the right level of noise I think!
Favorite beverage of all time. Go! There’s a really good independent coffee shop/van where I live called Tamp Culture and they do the best mochas and even let you chose what kind of chocolate (dark/milk/white) you want in them!

bonus

What are your top three books you would recommend to other people? Well I’ve already mentioned Wuthering Heights so to that I will add: Quiet by Susan Cain because this book made me proud to be an introvert and helped me realize that a lot of introverted traits are really assets. The Secret History by Donna Tartt is just mind-blowing and will remind you of everything you loved about university and campus life. And the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde because it’s just such a fun read for literature fans!
What’s your proudest blogging/reading/writing moment? Probably the first time Penguin approached me to review a book. I didn’t have any expectations of receiving free books when I started out reviewing and Penguin is my favourite publisher so it felt like a big moment the first time they emailed me! I still feel incredibly blessed that I’m lucky enough to be sent books to review!
Anything else you’d like to share? Thanks so much for hosting me on your blog Brittany! I think you do such a fantastic job of bringing readers together and I really do mean what I said about wanting to join in with more bookish conversation so please do get in touch on Food for Bookworms/Goodreads/Twitter if you have any thoughts on what I’ve said above!

Thanks, Natalie! Whew, WAR & PEACE is a bit intimidating for me! Awesome that you are finally reading it!! And that toffee drink from Starbucks sounds sooo good!
