TOP TEN TUESDAY
March 1, 2016
It’s Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by the wonderful blog at The Broke and the Bookish! This week’s topic was Ten Books To Read If You Are In The Mood For X
One of my favorite things when reading are those incredible, shocking moments where something unbelievable happens, a plot twist takes you by surprise, or something happens to a character that you just didn’t see coming. I avoid spoilers like a fiend because I cannot tell you how much I LOVE to be surprised by moments like these in books! It’s so much fun to be thrown for a loop and so today, I’m recommending my favorite books packed full of “omg moments” in many different ways!
Note: I will NOT spoil anything that happens in these books. Stating that they have “omg moments” will alert you to a possible twist but not every surprising moment in these books pertains to a twist. If you’re extremely sensitive to spoilers, maybe avert your eyes! There will be nothing directly given away though.
GONE GIRL by Gillian Flynn | Okay, obviously we all know by now what a twisted and insane book GONE GIRL is. I hadn’t read it until 2015 , AFTER the movie came out so I thought for sure I had figured it out and that it was spoiled for me. I’m a plot-guesser and my brain is always working to pick up on clues and solve a mystery so while one of my guesses for the book was right, the shocking moments didn’t stop there. There were so many crazy moments in this book and ones I could not have ever guessed!
ALL THE BRIGHT PLACES by Jennifer Niven | This isn’t a book you’d expect shocking moments from but there was one scene that totally took me by surprise and ripped me to shreds. I honestly gasped! Other people probably saw it coming but it really shook me.
THE LOVE THAT SPLIT THE WORLD by Emily Henry | This book was simply gorgeous in so many ways, one of which was the structure of everything. The reveals were layered so nicely but there was one reveal about the book and how everything worked that really caught me by surprise! I realized what was going on the split second before I read the words on the page and it made my heart skip a beat!
THE WINNER’S CRIME (The Winner’s Trilogy #2) by Marie Rutkoski | Ohhh this was basically an entire book full of “omg moments”! The characters have so many possibilities to just speak to each other and make things right and they keep missing those chances! It broke my heart to see how many “almost”s they had!!
EMMY & OLIVER by Robin Benway | This is another book that you wouldn’t really think of having an “omg moment” but one part truly surprised me and to this day it really stands out for me! I’m sure it wasn’t as big of a deal to other readers but for some reason, it really hit me!
DANGEROUS GIRLS by Abigail Haas | If you’re a mystery/thriller fan, you HAVE to read this book! It’s so realistic, mysterious, and suspenseful and I finished in one day because I couldn’t put it down!! There are a couple incredibly shocking moments when the reveals start to happen and the ending just had me reeling for days!
ILLUMINAE (The Illuminae Files #1) by Aime Kaufman & Jay Kristoff | Oh. Em. GEE this book was gooood. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from it when I first started but emotions ran high the whole time and there were so many surprising moments along with heart-pounding action!!
RED QUEEN (Red Queen Trilogy #1) by Victoria Aveyard | This book had some really neat elements and I was so focused on the plot that I did not see one thing coming! It definitely had a familiar feel, like a few other dystopian books I’ve read, so I was so excited to see a big surprise to really make it stand out and feel unique!
BLUE LILY, LILY BLUE (The Raven Cycle #3) by Maggie Stiefvater | I JUST re-read this book and there are so many moments that had me screaming, crying, shaking, swooning, and gasping. This series is AMAZING and each book gets better and better. I need to hold onto my feels for THE RAVEN KING. I’m so nervous and excited!
MISTBORN (Mistborn #1) by Brandon Sanderson | Honestly, every single Sanderson book I’ve ever read (so far) has an enormous twist or reveal or surprise somewhere. MISTBORN was the first book I read of his and I was floored on how amazing the world-building and plot is for this book and for the whole series. I’m always excited to see what comes next in his books!!

I think the most OMG moments I had was the Throne of Glass series. I mean, I actually missed my exit THREE times this morning because of Queen of Shadows! 🙂
I have a “jaw dropped” shelf on Goodreads for tracking books that made me say OMG hahah. It’s very helpful for topics like this 😉 I’m terrible at guessing twists/ figuring out mysteries in general, so I feel like I have more OMG moments than most people.. .but it’s fun to be shocked sometimes! I definitely agree with a lot of these (that I’ve read)
I am always, always in the mood for books with “OMG Moments.” So many of these are fantastic! I still need to read Emmy & Oliver and if it has surprises I’m definitely interested. Great picks!
Red Queen. Yes! I know what you’re talking about. I can’t remember what you’re referring to with Emmy & Oliver and All the Bright Places though. Hmm. Fun post none the less!
OMG, I have read most of the books on this list and there are some seriously shocking moments. I do believe Illuminae was my favorite. I NEED THAT SEQUEL NOW! Great list!
I really need to finish All The Bright Places. The Love That Split The World is on my tbr list.
Great list!! I love the Raven Cycle series and can’t wait for the release of the final book. Gone Girl is another great choice. I never saw some of the events in that book coming. A few of the other books that you listed are on my TBR list and I’m now even more intrigued.

Seriously, Sanderson shocks me every book I read! How does the man do it?! The two books that shocked me most recently were The Fixer by Jennifer Lynn Barnes and See How They Run by Ally Carter.
Oh great topic pick!! Definitely agree about Red Queen! And I am really hoping to stat the Winner’s Curse trilogy soonish!!
Here’s my Tuesday Post
Have a GREAT day!

Okay, there are so many books in the list that I’m dying to get to: Mistborn, The Red Queen, The Winner’s series. I did read Gone Girl with the rest of the world. I think I actually liked the movie better: quality level RARE.

OMG Moments – how great! I stuck with one of my faves, comedy, for this week.
Oh man, the one from Red Queen. It was, as you say, a definite omg moment. I’m glad Glass Sword is available now so I can figure out where that situation is heading!
