Interview with Melissa Wright, author of The Frey Saga

Today is day TWO in the Wild Worlds feature week and I have Melissa Wright, author of THE FREY SAGA, stopping by to chat about her series (available now!) and her upcoming title RISE OF THE SEVEN, the third book in the series.

Synopsis (for the first book, Frey) from GoodReads: Unaware she’s been bound from using magic, Frey leads a small, miserable life in the village where she’s sent after the death of her mother. But a tiny spark starts a fury of changes and she finds hersef running from everything she’s ever known.
Hunted by council for practicing dark magic, she is certain she’s been wrongfully accused. She flees, and is forced to rely on strangers for protection. But the farther she strays from home, the more her magic and forgotten memories return and she begins to suspect all is not as it seems.

Thanks to Melissa for agreeing to tell us a little bit more about the series!

You are actually on your third book in the Frey saga, coming out soon in 2012. Could you sum up a little bit what the series is about?
MW: The series essentially throws you into Frey’s life as it falls apart around her. She has no idea what’s going on, and because it’s told from her point of view, the reader is right there trying to figure out what’s happening as she does. She doesn’t realize she’s bound and has no idea of the events that led to her predicament, which just keeps getting worse. She has to figure out who to trust and fight to break the bonds while running for her life.

It looks like an interesting side of elf culture combined with a lot of magical aspects! Have you always been interested in the fantasy genre?
MW: I read a wide variety of genres (excluding horror – I’m kind of a chicken), but fantasy is definitely my favorite. I love getting lost in other worlds, love the fact that anything is possible. Reading, for me, is about escaping or discovering someone else’s imagination. Fantasy is the one place you can always find that.

How did you come up with the story? Did you have any inspirations from any of your favorite books?
MW: I would say the inspiration for Frey came from watching too much Sci-fi. My friends and I were constantly joking about making our own movie, but writing is a little more practical. I had just finished the Twilight saga and I thought Stephenie Meyer’s first person point of view style made the series more fun to read, so I tried it out on Frey.

So now you have three books in the series (and a novella in-between novel). Will three round it out for the trilogy? Did you always have three books in mind?
MW: I had originally planned five books for the series, but book three will have an ending satisfying enough that I can leave it for a few different projects and return to it at a later date. The fourth and fifth books would definitely have a more epic feel. I am also playing around with a few ideas for more short stories, focusing on Ruby or Steed, but I don’t have any set in stone plans as of yet.

How did you end up choosing the YA age range? Was it always a natural choice?
MW: I think it was natural for Frey’s character, but I wanted to write a book everyone could enjoy. I do find I have to censor myself occasionally, so I’m looking forward to writing a decidedly non-YA novel, but I will absolutely come back to YA afterwards.

And now a little less serious, and a little more fun – Quick Bookish Q&A!

Where is your favorite place to read/write?
MW: I love to read snuggled up under a blanket. I love to write at my desk, but it seems like the ideas always come in the shower or some such unlikely place.

Are there any authors you’re dying to meet?
MW: I’ve been reading a lot of Molly Harper lately, she cracks me up.

What’s the best book you’ve ever read?
MW: This is a tough one. If you make me choose, I’m going to say Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen.

Who’s your biggest literary crush?
MW: Can I have a crush on my own character?

Who’s your favorite literary villain?
MW: The gods in the Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne. Wicked funny.

Romance or Sci-fi?
MW: Romance

Paperback/Hardcover/eBook/Audiobook?
MW: I love audiobooks. I don’t have a lot of idle time (when I’m sitting, I’m writing) so every chance I get, whether it be driving, housework, working out, I am plugged in.

I’ve seen this around, but I didn’t realize the third book was coming out already!

Also, I theoretically like the idea of audio books because reading all the time makes my eyes hurt, but it’s so hard to find a narrator I like!

I haven’t even heard of these books before but they sound AWESOME!!! Adding them to my TBR right now. Great interview!!
