I love noticing title trends in the YA world (and in adult books too!) and I can also tell that there are certain words I latch onto. Book Title Buzzwords features books that I’ve read (or want to read) that follow some recent trends!
On this edition of Book Title Buzzwords, I wanted to go with an April Fool’s theme! “April” and “Fool” aren’t really popular words but I bet you’d be surprised on how many books have “lie” in the title in one way or another! I’m sharing my favorite and some that I hope to read coming up!
THE LIES OF LOCKE LAMORA by Scott Lynch | Book one in the Gentleman Bastard series | Random House | June 27, 2006
This quickly became one of my all-time favorite series… even when I had only read the first book (I’m now caught up on all three that are currently out). It’s non-stop fun with heists, cons, swearing, and friendship. The characters are just excellent and leap off the page. The setting is vivid and the series is a delightful fantasy that contains a little bit of magic that remains subtle and also still really drives the plot. I LOVE the bromances in these books and the main characters (as well as every other character) are just phenomenal. If you like adult fantasy, this is a MUST read. The books are just tons of fun and I recommend them to any fantasy readers, especially those who love heists!

THE LIES ABOUT TRUTH by Courtney C. Stevens | Harper Collins | November 3, 2015
I’ve been really shying away from some more “serious” contemporary reads (death, grieving, disease, etc) lately simply because I’m seeking escape in books at the moment but when I heard all of the great reviews for THE LIES ABOUT TRUTH, I knew I had to read it. I was wholly absorbed by this book and the characters were truly amazing. This book felt so realistic and the characters and reactions just really felt so genuine. The book was bittersweet but left me with so many positive feelings and this is one I definitely recommend if you’re in the mood for a good, solid contemporary read!

LIES BENEATH by Anne Greenwood Brown | Book one in the Lies Beneath trilogy | Random House | June 12, 2012
I was so pleasantly surprised with LIES BENEATH when I first read it! I don’t really do mermaid stories but this was so well-done and I loved that it was a little bit darker to bring a more haunting side to this tale. (No pun intended.) I love a good male POV in a market where I feel like I read a lot of female POVs and the audiobook for this book was great as well — it’s where I first fell in love with one of my favorite audio narrators, MacLeod Andrews. I thought the story was just really great and I couldn’t believe I ended up enjoying this mermaid book so much! I still need to finish the series and will have to do so soon! (I now know that the rest of the series didn’t get audiobooks — boooo — so I need to get my print copies.)

LIES I TOLD by Michelle Zink
“Grace has been adopted into a family of thieves…” “… never fall for your mark…” Cons, heists. I mean, really. This book just screams my name.

- EVEN WHEN YOU LIE TO ME by Jessica Alcott: This seems to have gotten some mixed reviews so it’s not super high on my list but I do still have a copy to read someday.
- SEVEN WAYS WE LIE by Riley Redgate: Inspired by the seven deadly sins and sounds really interesting!
- TWO LIES AND A SPY by Kat Carlton: Another book with some mixed reviews but it just sounds like so much fun.
- THREE TRUTHS AND A LIE by Brent Hartinger: Ooh boy. Suspense. Mystery. Thriller. Romance. I’m totally in.
- THE SAFEST LIES by Megan Miranda: I still haven’t read a Megan Miranda novel but I’m always excited for new thrillers!
- LITTLE BLACK DRESSES, LITTLE WHITE LIES by Laura Stampler: This actually sounds lot like a teen Shopaholic book!
- SECRETS, LIES, & SCANDALS by Amanda K. Morgan: Teens covering up a teacher’s death. Sounds like Teaching Mrs. Tingle! Except they kidnapped not killed.

Thanks for including my book in your post. I hope you got to read it! If not, I’d be happy to have one sent to you.
Best wishes,
Lauren
This is a brilliant post! There are totally trends in YA like this, and I can’t believe I’ve never seen anyone else put together a blog that highlights that. Thief of Lies sounds so good! How have I not heard of that one yet?
I haven’t read a single one of the books you listed–no lie! I did read What I Saw and How I Lied last year, and Ball Don’t Lie recently, and I want to read The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly. Fun topic!
Even When You Lie To Me didn’t really work for me, but it was a VERY quick read if you’re bored someday 😉 I really enjoyed Seven Ways We Lie and think the author did a nice job juggling all seven voices. Great list!
I love how you tied this into April Fool’s. I never thought about how often we see Lie in the titles of our books, but I guess it’s a popular theme!
