Book Title Buzzwords

I love noticing title trends in the YA world (and in adult books too!) and I can also tell that there are certain words I latch onto. Book Title Buzzwords features books that I’ve read (or want to read) that follow some recent trends!

On this edition of Book Title Buzzwords, I’m sharing a recent favorite title that you MUST check out — THE CROWN’S GAME by Evelyn Skye! I finished this book a while ago but can’t get it off my mind. It comes out next week and you absolutely need to read this book! It reminded me how much I love games and competitions in books (even possible deadly ones!) and it inspired a new Book Title Buzzwords post!

GET IN THE GAME

the crown's gameTHE CROWN’S GAME by Evelyn Skye | Book one in The Crown’s Game | HarperCollins | May 17, 2016

I just loved this book. It had a little bit of a NIGHT CIRCUS feel for me with two opposing magicians and the whole story was really just so well done. I loved the opposition and inevitable attraction. The book has some different romance angles but I like how there are more cards on the table and yet it’s not a love triangle. There’s intrigue, magic, passion, and history. It’s inspired by Imperial Russia and yet the story takes its own turns. I’m not a history person so I was afraid that I’d be lost not actually knowing but the plot is easy to follow and just a whole lot of fun all around. No matter what genres you love, THE CROWN’S GAME is one to try this spring/summer!

A Game of ThronesA GAME OF THRONES by George R.R. Martin | Book one in the Song of Ice and Fire series| Random House |August 6th 1996

I’m still not caught up on the TV show (this is what happens when you don’t have the premium channels. No, that’s a lie. This is what happens when you don’t watch TV and you read instead) but I’m still so in love with these books! It was one of my first big fantasy series so I was very hesitant to jump into the series (two years ago already!!) but ended up buddy reading and got so caught up in these books! I know it seems like a huge undertaking but if you really do want to read the series, I totally recommend it! I started the books and read one book every two months, spread out amongst my other reads, and it was totally manageable! Plus that really let everything sink in as I was reading.

Gameboard of the GodsGAMEBOARD OF THE GODS by Richelle Mead | Book one in the Age of X series | Penguin | June 4, 2013

I loved Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy series and was anxious to jump on GAMEBOARD OF THE GODS when I had first heard about it back in 2013. It sounded a little dystopian but actually turned out to be futuristic sci-fi with a mythological twist on the plot. Gods are actually involved here and things get rather interesting when they come into play! It was also a foray back into adult (versus YA) and it was an enjoyable change of pace! The romance was fun and sexy and I really loved the dynamic of all of the characters. This book was a little hard to get into at first simply because I had interpreted its genre wrong (I didn’t realize the mythology was such a large part) but once I got a grip on what the book really was, it was a breeze to read and a lot of fun! I really enjoyed the second book and I’m still anticipating the third.

THE HUNGER GAMES by Suzanne Collins | Book one in The Hunger Games trilogy | Scholastic | September 14, 2008

Last but definitely not least… THE HUNGER GAMES! Obviously we all know this book and I’m sure most people have read it and/or seen the movies but it will always hold a special place in my heart. I borrowed THE HUNGER GAMES from a friend back in 2011 and I DEVOURED the series. This was the first I really new of Young Adult and I wanted more, more, more. I actually wanted more dystopian but I could only find it in Young Adult and… voila. I became a YA addict! I owe this series so much and probably wouldn’t be blogging or maybe even reading like I am now without it.

FUTURE GAMES WE PLAY

The Long Game (The Fixer, #2) Mind Games (Lock & Mori, #2) The Way to Game the Walk of Shame

THE LONG GAME by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
This is the sequel to THE FIXER which was so much fun to read! I feel like it’s tricky to get YA political intrigue right but Jennifer Lynn Barnes nailed it. I’m excited to continue this series!

MIND GAMES by Heather W. Petty
MIND GAMES is book two in the Lock & Mori series, a contemporary YA adaptation of Sherlock Holmes (still in London). I really enjoyed the first book and loved how the detective work was handled!
