Book Title Buzzwords | RED, WHITE, and BLUE

Book Title Buzzwords

I love noticing title trends in the YA world (and in adult books too!) and I can also tell that there are certain words I latch onto. Book Title Buzzwords features books that I’ve read (or want to read) that follow some recent trends!

Happy 4th of July!! No matter where you live or what you’re doing, I hope it’s a spectacular day! Today I decided to go holiday-themed and get a Book Title Buzzwords post done with some RED, WHITE, and BLUE keywords! Here are some of my favorites!

red seas under red skiesRED SEAS UNDER RED SKIES | Book two in the Gentleman Bastard series | Random House | July 31, 2007

RED SEAS UNDER RED SKIES is the second book in the Gentleman Bastard series by Scott Lynch and I was totally swept away by the first book (and every one after that), THE LIES OF LOCKE LAMORA. It’s an adult fantasy series and it’s absolutely hilarious. The fantasy is more fictional lands than actual magic (though there is some, it’s not the focus) and everything is just so incredibly clever. Witty characters, abundant swearing, bromances, and an amazing crew. I just LOVE this series and I can’t wait for more!

White Cat
WHITE CAT by Holly Black | Book one in the Curse Workers trilogy | Simon & Schuster | May 4, 2010

WHITE CAT is the first book in the Curse Worker series by Holly Black which is an urban fantasy trilogy. Magic is real and certain people and those who have it possess certain abilities. Cassel is from a family of con artist “curse workers” and gets tangled up in the magical crime family business. The first book, BLACK CAT, really hooked me and I ended up reading all three books on audio (Jesse Eisenberg narrates)! The books are realistic and yet fantastic. I love the comic tone, male narration, and the sense of gray area when it comes to morality of how Cassel should and shouldn’t get involved with magic. I just really enjoyed the whole series from start to finish!

Nantucket BlueNANTUCKET BLUE by Leila Howland | Book one in the Nantucket duology | Disney-Hyperion | May 7, 2013

I love NANTUCKET BLUE. It’s one of my favorite contemporary books (and series, with it’s sequel NANTUCKET RED). I just SO identified with Cricket in so many ways and I really thought Leila Howland did an amazing job of creating such realistic characters and situations. I truly loved, loved, loved both of these books and this is one I really recommend to any contemporary fans. Cricket is such an amazing character — she’s real but also has flaws and she goes through so many relatable things. The books really cover so much in the average teenager’s life but even as an adult, I can identify with a lot.

RED RISING by Pierce Brown
Can you believe I haven’t read this yet!? I’ve heard nothing but good things but just never ended up starting it. I tried the audio but I listen at 1.5x speed and it was kind of hard to follow the accent at that rate!

RUBY RED by Kerstin Gier

This just sounds like so much fun. It definitely sounds like a little bit of a CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC feel and I can’t wait to read it!

WORDS IN DEEP BLUE by Cath Crowley
This is an Aussie release and it already has me in love with it. I won’t even go into it — just take this quote from the blurb for yourselves: “This is a book about books. About the power of literature to cradle our past, present and future selves. It’s about how we leave ourselves behind when we die. How we leave our histories in the things we love – like books.”
