In desperate need of some good fantasy book recommendations!

Some of my most loved books & series are fantasy but it’s such an investment to be involved in big world-building and elaborate plots. Fantasy used to be my most read genre and now I barely read it anymore! I also have little to no desire to read romantasy and prefer little romance in my fantasy reads, and I’m also not really reading young adult anymore. Books to fit my preferences seem hard to find nowadays!

I was so excited to receive Red Queen from @minotaur_books / @macmillan.audio! I ended up listening to the audiobook via @netgalley with narrator Scott Brick, whose voice I’ve enjoyed in other books too.

Red Queen wasn’t my usual domestic/psych thriller, but I do like taking breaks from the “norm”! This reminded me a lot of the vibes of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and Lars Kepler’s The Hypontist (and sequels). It’s already a huge hit in Spain and this is it’s translated debut in the US!

Heading into a new series is always a lot to take in. It took me a while to get the hang of the characters but I really got invested in their stories once I finally did! I wish we had known more about Antonia right from the start so I could understand her talents more and really try to appreciate what was going on. And I still feel like I didn’t get to know Jon enough and just didn’t connect to him like I had hoped.

The story itself was interesting but it wasn’t as interconnected as I thought it would be, considering its rave reviews. Antonia did become involved personally, but I thought it was going to be deeper than it was. There was just a little something ineffable that was missing that I can’t put my finger on, and the religious undertones were a turn-off, especially since they weren’t really essential to the plot and were more of a device and alias.

I’m glad I read this one but it didn’t quite wrap up to be a super exciting finish. Another thank you to Macmillan for providing me with these review copies and helping me expand my thriller reads!

Have you started watching Shadow and Bone season 2 yet? I just started today and I feel so proud as a Leigh Bardugo fan!

Fun Fact: Shadow and Bone’s debut in 2012 was the very first book event I ever attended (on the @FierceReads tour) so it’s always held such a special place for me! I read the first book and fell in love, and I’ve been such a fan ever since.

I’ve seen many books get turned into TV shows and movies, but I’ve never felt so personally connected to the whole experience. I don’t get cheesy on here often, but it feels like the fandom had a part in making the show happen… and I guess they did by showing such love for the Grishaverse!

I’ve been lucky to meet Leigh Bardugo several times over the years as well and she’s always so kind, funny, and welcoming. It’s just always so much fun being a part of this fandom!

I loved What Lies in the Woods by Kate Alice Marshall! It’s a thriller and it really just checked all the boxes for me. I had such a good time reading it from start to finish!
